It has been a part of Empires like Magadha and Mauryas; it also experienced the rule of Guptas and Harshvardhana. Later by 13th Century the region was conquered by Muhammad of Ghor, he’s territories in India eventually formed the Delhi Sultan. In 1374, under Firuz Shah Tughlaq Hindu temples in the vicinity were ordered to be demolished.

The region also witnessed the rule of Sharqi dynasty. They proclaimed independence after the Delhi Sultanate under the Tughluq Dynasty had begun to lose control. In 1414 Varanasi region was re-conquered to Delhi Sultanate until it was conquered by the Mughals.

During Akbar’s reign, the region saw some development as two major temples dedicated t Shiva and Vishnu were built. This ushered the revival of the city as 16th Century was also the time when first tourists began to visit. although these gains were lost under the rule of Aurangzeb as he order he destruction of many temples in the city.

After the Mughal empire had been disintegrated, within a century Most of Indian sub-continent was ruled by Pro Hindu Confederacy of Marathas. It is during this period that many sites of the region were developed. Marathas and Bhumihar kings played an important role.

The region in the 18th Century passed into the hands of the British East India Company. But the local kings continued to wield immense power under them. The Varanasi lok Sabha constituency in 2014 elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Parliament.

2011 census states that Varanasi district had a population of 3,682,194 making it the 75th most populous district in India (out of the 640 in total). The district has a population density of 2399 people per square kilometer. The sex ratio stood at 909 females for every 1000 males. The literacy rate was at 77. 05 %. The district has witness a 17.32 % population growth for the period of 2001-11.
